5. Rogue River, OR
6. Glacier National Park, MT

Choosing a gift for someone special can always be a bit of a challenge. But when youre buying for a hobby enthusiast, your options expand as a host of hobby-related gifts becomes a possibility. For boating enthusiasts especially, a well chosen boating gift can be both enjoyable and functional.
There may be those people who are difficult to buy for because they seem to have everything. But when it comes to boaters, everything is a bit more difficult to acquire; for this reason, giving a boating gift means that youll always have something to buy that special someone outfitting their boat with the latest and greatest in modern gadgets.
Todays sophisticated boats are outfitted similar to floating homes. Subsequently, you can easily find a boating gift that adds to the convenience and luxury of the boats living quarters. Boating supply stores offer a wide variety of convenience items and appliances that are specially designed for onboard use such as blenders and coffee makers. Another boating gift could be a host of safe and attractive dinnerware that the boat owner can use to entertain. There are a variety of beautiful cocktail glasses, plates, serving trays, and utensils that you can arrange in a basket with linens that complement the boats interior.
To go along with this boating gift theme, you may want to present the boat owner with an additional basket of easily stored, non-perishable food items to keep on board for entertaining purposes such as small jams, crackers, or a nice bottle of wine. If you are staying on board for the evening or for an extended period of time you could think about bringing along a pre-arranged meal for an onboard feast.
There are also a host of decorative items to give as a boating gift including small candles, placemats, picture frames, and non-breakable vases. You could even put together a lovely basket with miniature toiletry items including small towels, creams, lotions, soaps, and powder.
Of course, there are also quite a few practical items that would serve as a wonderful boating gift, although these tend to be on the pricier side. Check with the boat owner to try to find out what items he/she still needs but hasnt yet purchased.
No matter what you choose to purchase, the truth is that a thoughtful boating gift for the water enthusiast in your life will be well received and much appreciated!

For many people who live near the ocean or a lake, the purchase of a sailboat is a dream that they work hard to achieve. For some people, sailing seems like a very romantic activity, and a great way to spend time. If you live close to a large body of water, you should consider purchasing a sailboat. You will have a great time with the boat, whether it involves just floating around in the cool ocean breeze and soaking up the sun, or whether you want to take a grand voyage down a coast. There are many reasons why a sailboat could be a great choice to buy.
Some people argue that it is therapeutic to simply lay on a sailboat as it floats around in the ocean. It is definitely a great time to gather your thoughts and meditate for a while. The rhythmic bobbing of the sea makes some sick, but for others it lulls them into a near trance like state. So if you would like a quiet place to go out on and soak up the sun while meditating and having time to yourself, a sailboat is the place to do it. But you shouldnt get the idea that sailboats are always solitary.
Sailboats are also great places to spend time with friends and family. Instead of inviting someone over for dinner in your dining room, you can invite them our for a picnic at sea. Its definitely classy, and youll find that you will spend more and more time with friends out at sea if you buy a sailboat. It is something that not only you will enjoy, but all of your friends and family who you enjoy spending time with.
Many people also use sailboats for actually traveling places instead of just floating around close to shore. Depending on the place that you live, there could be many different short voyages available to you at almost any time of the year. It could be a nice campground a little bit further down the coast, or a small island a few hours off shore. It is a great way to get somewhere and camp out for the night or the weekend, then sail your way back home.
Out of all of these things, if none have appealed to you then you should probably not consider buying a sailboat. They take lots of maintenance, but if you have a passion for the sea then you wont mind.

If you are pursuing becoming a boat owner, there are many factors to consider, not the least of which is engine type. There are several types from which to choose, depending on the size of your boat, the frequency of its use, and the environment in which it will sail.
Deciding between gasoline and diesel is one . If your boat will see regular use, you may want to go with diesel. Diesel provides extra muscle, although it is not offered on most powerboats. You will need to take the boat out often, because rust is an issue in diesels which sit idle.
Gasoline engines are cheaper, and fuel is more often available. Gasoline powered boats can sit for long periods without seeing any use. Out on the water, gasoline engines are quite responsive to the throttle, providing super speed bursts when you need them.
Probably the three most well known types of motors are inboard, outboard, and stern drive. The last type is the most popular, especially for pleasure boats. The stern drive is powered by an inboard motor. Power goes through a shaft in the bottom of the boat to drive the propeller, which is located underneath. These engines offer major horse power!
Those thinking about boats should know before buying that there is a lot of care involved to make sure your boat stays in superior condition. With all their exposure to water and the dirt it carries, neglect of marine engines can be highly problematic. Proper maintenance should be practiced diligently.
Careful winterization is imperative. It can be time consuming, but when taking the boat out in spring, you will appreciate it! Depending on whether you have an inboard, outboard, or stern drive motor, the winterization tasks vary. For the first two, the engine must be flushed with clean water. For any boat, filling the fuel tank to capacity will prevent condensation. Adding a fuel stabilizer is smart, too. Water should be drained, faucets turned off, and antifreeze added. These are just a few of the many chores that will be required before you store your boat.
If you are up to the work of taking care of marine engines, you are in for a wonderful experience. You will find that few things are more exciting than being the “captain of your own ship”!

As more and more people take up the hobby of boating, our waterways surge with the enthusiasm of new captains. While its understandable that people are drawn to boating, it is important for them to understand that taking to the water means doing so responsibly, as the lives of those onboard and around them are at stake. A boating course that teaches the fundamentals of boating is absolutely essential for anyone interested in boating.
The love of water may be innate, but boating is a learned skill. It requires a working knowledge of the water, an understanding of the complexity of the boat, and the ability to use all the boating equipment effectively and responsibly. A reputable boating course will ensure that you are fully prepared for operating a large or small vessel on water.
First and foremost, it is crucial that you work with a reputable school through which you take your boating course. A boating course found in such a location will offer comprehensive classroom instruction and, in some cases, instruction on water. You will initially be taught the fundamentals of boat operation. A boating course will show you how to operate the boat and properly use navigational devices. Of course a boating course will also lay the groundwork for boating safety teaching the essentials of first aid and water rescue, as well as how to handle any onboard crisis that could arise.
You can also find a boating course online where you can learn the fundamentals of boating from the comfort of your own home. If you are someone who needs hands-on instruction, however, this may not be the boating course thats best for you.
Also, keep in mind that a reputable boating course can often save you money in the long run, as insurance companies will offer lower rates to those who have successfully completed a boating course.
A boating course is the responsible way to begin a boating hobby. It is only with preparedness that boating can be its most enjoyable.

Boating under the influence of alcohol is responsible for over 50% of boating fatalities every year. This percentage is rising as safety laws concerning personal floatation devices pushes down the death rate every year.
The number of recreational boating deaths in 1976 was 1,466. This was with an estimated 11.4 million boats for a rate of 12.4 deaths per 100,000 boats in use. Ten years later, in 1986, the number had dropped almost in half as the number of boats in use increased by almost 5 million. In 2005, the rate was less than half of the rate in 1976. What caused this steady decline? It can mostly be attributed to laws mandating the use of approved personal floatation devices in boats.
This eliminated a major cause of deaths. It was a shame that the Government had to step in and pass laws that made people stop being stupid and realize the importance of a personal floatation device when operating the high speed recreational boats that were becoming popular. Now, the main culprit is another form of stupidity. Alcohol and wild parties have long been associated with boating, but the operator of a boat has no more business being drunk than the driver of an automobile.
In addition to Federal laws, the majority of States have passed OUI or BUI (operating under the influence/boating under the influence) laws modeled after drunk driving laws. Boaters are being watched closer on public waterways and the tolerance level is being dropped to zero in many areas. Boat operators are often beginning to adapt the highly successful designated driver approach that has been helpful in reducing deaths on the highways.
There seems to be something about the fresh air, the blowing wind, and the feel of water beneath the boat that increases the effects of alcohol on the decision making and motor skills of boat operators. Although tests on drunk boating have not been as intensive as those done on drunk driving, much of the data can be transferred. The bottom line is that operating a boat, like operating a vehicle on the road, requires a sober and alert driver. Many people may look at the deaths per number of boats statistics to make a case that this is really a minor problem. But isnt one death on the water too many?
There is even a boating based organization to champion the fight against drunk boating. BADD, or Boaters Against Drunk Driving, has become active in promoting stricter laws and educating boaters to the hazards of boating under the influence of alcohol and drugs. No one is against having a good time on the water, but the operator of a boat is like the Captain of the ship and in his hands rests the responsibility for the lives of himself, his passengers, and others on the waterways. It should be a sobering responsibility.

Looking for a place to camp overnight on Horsey Island we were closing in on the rusty barges which are run aground in Hamford Water. Joel was up head and we could hear him cursing and as we reached him we could see why he was so upset. The sandy beach was there alright, but to get to it we would have to wade through five hundred yards or more of mud due to the tide now being completely out.
Before I knew it two of the guys from our group had already jumped out of their kayak seats and were knee deep in the mudflats and swearing liberally. I had not been that afraid for a long time and I remembered many stories of people being trapped in mud and stuck there until the tide came back in and they drowned.
I had a very bad feeling about the situation and knew the Walton backwaters were predominately marshland and mudflats. I tried to persuade the others that it was a bad idea and that we should call for help on our mobile phones. Before my appeal had even been considered everyone else had got out of their kayak seats and were taking their chances in the mud.
I was so tired and ached to get out of my inflatable kayak. A desperate need to just go for it took over me. I took a deep breath and leapt out of my kayak seat and sank immediately knee deep into cold, wet, martian like mud that surrounds Horsey Island. Within the first two steps I lost my trainers and was now wading barefoot. I was thankful only that it was so dark I could barely see where or what I was stepping on. What made progress through the mud infinitely worse was hauling my inflatable kayak weighed down with all my kit and paddles.
The two guys with the sit on top and the Perception kayak were moving marginally quicker due to these boats being significantly lighter. In the dark all I could hear was a royal amount of swearing as everyone tried to avoid falling over or plummeting too far into the foul-smelling mud.
It was impossible to take more than a few steps without collapsing on top of my inflatable kayak from exhaustion. I longed to just leave it there but I knew the tide would come back in soon and I would have no way of returning home. At one point I took a step forward and sank right up to my backside. At that split second I thought my luck had run out. I lunged backwards and grasped for my kayak. This scared me senseless as a few inches further and I would have been stuck and I doubt very much the others would have been able to pull me out.
I just wanted to be at home in my warm bed. Once I got my breath back I slowly and timidly stepped forward again. I could feel sharp pain in my feet and prayed it was just stones and shells I was stepping on and not broken parts of the rusting barges that we were passing uncomfortably close to.
I could just make out the shadow if Joel dragging the Perception kayak who was now a couple of hundred years up ahead. I shouted to him asking if he had made it to the beach yet and was dreadfully dismayed when he swore back that he had not. I cursed my inflatable kayak that although filled with air still weighed a ton. This was by far one of the worst experience of my life and I could not understand how on earth an easy paddle around Horsey Island had ended up with this nightmare scenario.
Heads down and with gritted determination we finally made it to the beach. Covered in mud and entirely confused we looked in the dark for somewhere to pitch out tents. I could not believe that both Nicks and my inflatable kayak had survived the ordeal un-punctured which is a testament to their toughness and durability.

There is a different type of boat required if you want to do deep sea fishing compared to a fun craft for river fishing or cruising. What a boat needs goes according to your lifestyle, your experience and what you are interested in. If you hobby is fishing then you do not need to buy a speed boat.
Boat Types:
Fishing Boats:
Is your main reason to buy a boat going to be for fishing? It if is, than you need a fishing boat. Fishing boats come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. It depends on where you plan to go fishing. There are boats designed specifically towards where they are going to be used. Airboats can take you to fishing spots that would not be able to normally get access to with other types of boats. For example, low level water areas such as a swamp. Some fishing boats are more suitable for when you want to go fishing in bigger bodies of water and after the bigger fish.
There are fishing boats that are built for both freshwater and salt-water fishing. They function well for every type of fishing and water.
Leisure Boats:
These boats are great for people who want to drive around the lakes and other waters with your friends and family. Some of the leisure boats even have large bows that have more seats and spots for sunbathing.
It is fun to drive from one end of the lake to the other, in a leisure boat, looking at all the different types of cottages, to see what changes there are from the previous summer and to wave across to friends on shore stretched out lazily in their lawn chairs. People are so friendly. Complete strangers will give you a friendly wave from their cottage.
Closed Bow Runabout boats are swift and smooth to drive. You can use them for a variety of water sports.
Sailboats are for those that like to relax as they cruise around the lake and oceans. Sailboats are dependent on wind so it does take time to get to wherever you are going. Larger sailboats also have a tiny motor for when there is next to no wind or to get off the lake/ocean faster if a storm is brewing in the distance.
Kayaks are very suitable for most body of waters. They only have seats for one or two people but they are great to get into areas other boats could not get into. Kayaks are easy to maneuver in hard to get around places.
Canoes are a cheap boat to buy. You can use them for fishing lakes, ponds, small rivers and streams. My father and brothers favorite past time was canoe-tripping. Similar to camping but you go by canoe from lake to lake and stop at night to set up camp on land. It is amazing how much camping gear you can get into a canoe.
Rowboats are inexpensive and built sturdy. They can be a lot of work to row back to shore if you have been fishing all day. It is wise to decide, part way through the day, when you want to return so you can turn around and continue to fish. At least you are heading home at the same time.
Deck Boats are fun leisure boats. They usually hold 8-12 people and the party crowd loves them.
Houseboats and Yachts are great for entertaining and boat living. They have lots of room. Houseboats are expensive and but not suitable for anyone who is new to boating.
A visit to a boat show will give you an even bigger selection of types of boats that are available.

Boat docks are the least regarded among boat accessories, being overlooked most of the time. They are, in reality, accessories that boat owners cannot do without. Boat docks are a necessity especially when boats come to harbor. It is the place where people embark on or disembark from the boat.
Boat docks are available in floating or stationary models. They function well for commercial and industrial uses, as well as for marinas and residential docks.
Many years back, boat docks were constructed from wood and steel. Over time, though, they were proven to be not sturdy enough. They also required more maintenance work.
Eventually, aluminum docks came into existence. These were stronger and more long-lasting. They were corrosion- and splinter-proof and would not bend and break over time. They are able to endure the toughest of weather and water conditions without compromising form and sturdiness.
There are a great variety of boat docks in different sizes. Among them are slip and platform docks, hip roof docks, gable roof docks, sundeck and sundeck combo docks, and commercial docks.
Aluminum docks may be personalized in their design or rendering. This makes the boat docks tailor-made to suit varied customer needs. For the more creative ones, boat docks may be assimilated in the architectural structure and interior design of a home.
Because of the growing number of boat aficionados, boat docks can now be obtained as do-it-yourself kits. As a bonus, suppliers even provide installation and technical services not only for boat docks but for boat lifts as well.
Boat lifts are a must-have if boat docks are not utilized as a marina. Boat docks can also be accessorized by benches and swimming platforms, ladders, dock edgings and cleats, fiberglass storage lockers, and power stations.
For marina purposes, boat docks are generally made of aluminum because of its maintenance-free feature and for environmental safety. The aluminum itself is rust-free, with the floats stuffed with foam and constructed from high quality polyethylene. The decking is also made of rust-free and warp-free materials such as cured wood, aluminum board, and concrete slabs.
Generally speaking, boat docks offer both functional and decorative uses in just a single kit.

The Stearns Cordova was the first inflatable kayak I ever purchased. I was looking for a kayak that would match as near as possible the performance found in a hard-shell kayak.
Also the practicality of being able to store an inflatable kayak easily inside the house was something of a necessity at the time. This kayak does have a genuine feel of a plastic boat once it is inflated as it has an extremely rigid hull.
The build quality of the Stearns Cordova inflatable kayak is also extremely good and has all the features you would expect from D-rings, removable spray deck, fitted kayak seat, adjustable footrests, bungee straps and two material cargo holds.
The Cordova is also very hard wearing and is made from reinforced nylon and PVC.
It has three separate air chambers and rather annoyingly they all take three different valves so make sure you buy a pump which has multiple connectors and be prepared to modify them if need be. The integral kayak seat is adequate but does not offer any real comfort for prolonged paddles however it does suffice for short journeys.
A good feature are the adjustable foot straps that allow both short and tall people to adjust their paddling position for the maximum possible comfort. They also add extra turning and handling performance.
The cockpit is fitted with a foam padded ring and the detachable spay skirt can be taken off to allow for a sit on top kayak like feel. This inflatable kayak has a ribbed hull and fin allowing for better tracking. The Cordova looks very stylish in orange and grey and the orange is not too bright or offensive.
Like most quality inflatable kayaks the Stearns Cordova comes with a puncture repair kit and has a very good bag about the size of a laundry bag which once deflated allows you to transport this inflatable with relative ease.
As my first inflatable kayak I found it quite difficult to warm to and for a beginner the Stearns Cordova can feel very tippy and will take some time to get used to. I would recommend this kayak to a more seasoned kayaker, where storage space was a premium and for shorter journeys.
Overall I had many good kayak travels in the Cordova which was often mistaken for a plastic boat. I would recommend this inflatable kayak for its many qualities including good speed and tracking for an inflatable kayak together with stylish looks, excellent build quality and durability. The only draw back I found personally was the stability for a novice and the minimalist comfort factor of the seat.
The Stearns Cordova is 12ft long and 30 inches wide and weighs in at 31 pounds. It cost around $500 so not the cheapest inflatable kayak money can buy but definitely one of the best I have paddled.
