A question many experienced and novice fly fisherman may ask themselves is Why tie my own leaders when I can by them at any sporting goods store or local fly shop? I am not sure if there is a right or wrong answer to that question, but for me it is a way to better appreciate, participate, and understand the sport of fly fishing.

I began hand tying my own leaders a few years ago for several reasons; the first reason was cost, commercially available leaders are just plain expensive, and when you consider the life expectancy of a leader, tying your own looks like an attractive alternative; the second reason was my inept ability at tying my own flies, perhaps my inadequacy in this aspect of fly fishing forced me to try another way to connect intimately with the sport; the third reason was that hand tying my own leaders was a way to provide my fellow fishing partners with personal gifts for each trip we take.

So why would you tie you own leaders? Consider the following:
Cost- Hand tied leaders cost very little, pennies in fact, compared to commercially available leaders.

It is easier and quicker to change and re-tie a hand tied leader when conditions change.

You can create leaders specific to the fishing conditions you fish in most often.

The personal satisfaction of catching a fish on a leader you created yourself.

Lets start with the basics, what is a leader and why is it important?

A leader connects your fly line to the fly.

A leader acts as the medium to transfer the energy of the fly line to the fly during the cast.

A leader relieves the energy from the fly line and sets up the proper presentation of the fly during a cast.

A leader helps presents your fly in a life like manner, dead drifts for nymphs or realistic floats for dry flies.

What are the components of a leader? In order to start tying your own leaders you must first understand the three basic sections of a leader: Butt, Body, and Tippet.

The Butt is a very important section of your leader. It is the section of your leader that begins the transfer of energy from the fly line to your leader. The size of this section of your leader is an important consideration, most recipes call for a butt section with a diameter between .020 to .026. A butt section that is too limp will cause the leader to not properly transfer the energy to the Body.

The Body is created with smaller diameter material and helps keep control of the fly for proper presentation.

The Tippet uses the smallest diameter material in your leader and are usually 16 inches to 24 inches long. Your fly will be tied directly to this section of your leader. Tippet material comes in many different styles and specialty material that will depend on your fishing circumstances.

What are the different types of leader material?
Monofilament - Mono line is the most common leader material to use. Mono comes in a variety of sizes, stiffness and diameters. Most leaders are tied using mono because of the variety, diameters, stiffness, and stretch and abrasion resistance. Fluorocarbon - A synthetic material that claims to be nearly invisible under water by having the same refracting index as water. The debate is still going on whether Fluorocarbon is better then mono. Fluorocarbon is good for the last section of tippet on a tapered leader. Braided Super Lines - A synthetic line made by weaving thin diameter man-made materials to form a no-stretch, low diameter and very strong line. Super lines are usually to limp for leaders, but I like to use short pieces of braided line with full sinking fly lines on short nymph leaders. Knots: What are the best Knots to use when tying different sections of leader material together?

The two knots I use most frequently when joining different sections of leaders are the blood knot and the surgeons knot. You should become proficient at how to tie both of these knots, with a little practice you will soon master these and be on your way to creating your own leaders.

How long should my leader be and other considerations: Leaders can come in all lengths with different diameters in the Butt, Body and Tippet. Your leaders should be built to suit the type of fishing you are planning. For example if you plan on fishing for toothy predators such as northern pike or its smaller cousin the pickerel you need to consider using a tippet with cut resistant material. If you are fishing delicate dry flies you should consider a long fine tapered leader. If your quarry is Salmon or Steelhead your leaders should be abrasion resistant and strong.

Tools: What can I use to help me start creating my own leaders?

I like the software program called LeaderCalc. LeaderCalc has a nice selection of leader recipes for most fishing situations. It also includes a nice feature that allows you to customize the label so you can quickly identify the type of leader, material used and purpose. As with most things in life the best way to become better at creating your own hand tied leaders is to start tying and then use them when fishing. You will quickly gain knowledge that only comes from experience and experimentation with different material, knots and lengths.

By the middle of the first semester, even an average music major can easily fall prey into the crackpot-genius category, walking with blood-shot eyes towards the next class while humming incoherent pam-pa-ram-pam-pam tunes from last nights rehearsals. So what do you get with an hours lecture on counterpoint? Drool.

Start shaping up your schedule. How do you intend to do that? Start by accepting and appreciating your calling. Not everyone is called to be a musician, or lucky enough to grow muscles ample to carry your cello around and get through past that nerve-wrecking college auditions in the first place. Since you are reading this article, you are probably one of the few chosen thousands. Understand that without love for music, a college student just flirting with a music degree is definitely bound to fail.

Your music is an inspiration in itself. Appreciate what you do. Appreciate the privilege that while the rest of the world is at war, you are safe indoors playing music. Once your major has sunk in, you will definitely find less time to complain about the many rehearsals you need to rush to.

The second? Rhythm. Rhythm I say? Yes. Somehow, there is a very beautiful metaphor between what we do, which is playing music, and how we live it. Find a rhythmic pattern in your everyday routine. Plot out your schedule among your activities. Start with actual activities (classes, rehearsals, violin lessons, choir practice, music club meetings and the like.) Next, fill up the empty space with what you think you need to do (practice Bachs Double Concerto, do research for music history class, etc.)

In every activity, always include a time frame. A time frame will always help you focus and direct your energy. It will subconsciously set your mind on the work at hand. The more things overlap, the less you get anything done.

Get used to the fact that musicians, especially when you are still a student, can never get away from the fast-becoming tedious task of practicing your instrument. Why do I say tedious? With so many things to do, you can become unconsciously too tired to do any of those things which youre supposed to do! Thus, the more you think about the load of things you need to do, the more tired you become and the less you get anything done.

The key to a well-utilized, productive practice time is compartmentalizing. When you need to study period pieces, devote at least an hour of practice for each period. Jumping from one piece to another piece, from one period to another period never helps. It clutters your mind more and thus, it becomes a tragic source of energy leakage. Focus your mind on one piece. It is always helpful to analyze a piece and single out difficult and technical parts. Start with those difficult technical passages and from there, proceed to easier parts.

Lastly, experiment on a schedule that you think works best with you. Consider at what time of day you are most active and productive. Maximize the use of those hours.

Being a music major can be a time-confusing, schedule-juggling experience. But for some music majors who know how to identify between energy leakage and productive activities, their college years as music majors have been one of the most rewarding experiences they ever had. At least, they can play music and choose to worry or not about grades. When one goes professional, though you play music, this time you will have to worry about earning a living! It is just a matter of choosing your activities, plotting a schedule, sticking to the schedule and enjoying every single minute of music making!

Which of these is your favorite mantra? Or do you have one Ive not included? The topic of time, or rather the lack of it, is a recurring theme for many of us. We all are so busy being friends, parents, spouses, sons, daughters, employees, professionals, neighbors, home owners, citizens, and volunteers that we cant seem to fit it all into a 24 hour day. Our plate is full, and yet our time cup seems empty. So how do we find the time to be all and do it all? Well, lets start with three themes.

1. Start valuing time moreit is not free

2. Accept that time cannot be managed

3. Establish time policies

TIME IS OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE

One of the ways we really limit ourselves is by viewing time as free. The truth is, time is our most valuable resource. Yes, I hear you thinking yah, yah, yah, time is money– but thats not what I mean at all. Let me ask you–When you reach the end of your life, do you think youll say I wish I had more money? or I wish I had more time? My guessyoull wish for more time.

However, we often act as if time is endless and spend it far more frivolously than we spend our money (well, many of us do!). Consider these questions

1. What percentage of your time do you spend doing things you do not enjoy or actually dread?

2. What percentage of your time do you spend doing things that do not directly contribute to your goals, wants, priorities or interests?

3. Add up these percentages. Would you spend this portion of your income buying things you did not want, need, enjoy, or get value from?

What can you do to start placing more value on your time? You might write down your top 10 priorities for your life and then assess how you can orient your time around them. Or, if your time is drained by commitments and obligations that you feel you should do rather than those you are thrilled to do, think about ways to eliminate of those things right now. Can you delegate them to others? Hire it out? Just stop doing it? Be creative. Be focused. Reclaim some time!

TIME CANNOT BE MANAGED

In terms of resources, time is the great equalizer. We all get the same amount–24 hours per day. No one gets more or less. The amount of time we have is fixed and, as such, cannot be managed. What we can manage is our choices and our actions. If you dont have enough time, ask yourself why. Have you let too many things creep in to your day? Have you taken on too many obligations or commitments? Have your actions and priorities gotten out of synch?

I have come to believe that the notion of time management is a myth to a large degree. When we try to manage time, what we really end up doing is borrowing from other places. When you manage to squeeze in more time at the office to finish up a project, you are borrowing time away from family, friends, or yourself.

How often do you borrow time from one part of your life (work, family, friends, fitness, sleep) and lend that time to another? And, how often do you pay it back? Is there one area of your life that is not very good at meeting its debts (i.e., borrows far more than it lends?). Quite simply, if we keep borrowing without paying it back, eventually we will drain the account dry. Maybe well get sick (from borrowing too much from self care time) or lose important relationships or miss out on meaningful events. If this is happening to you, it is time to take stock and ask yourself — What can I do to stop juggling time and start giving time to what matters most?

CREATE SOME TIME POLICIES

OK, here is where we get down to the tips you may have been looking for. But I warn you, these tips will not help solve your time problems unless you effectively begin to value your time more than anything else and you start managing your choices and actions, rather than your hours and minutes.

I really like the idea of policies and use them frequently. Businesses use them all the time. Once we have a policy on something it takes on an official, cant-be-changed-without-an-act-of-God level of seriousness that helps us stick to our plans. If I tell someone I have a policy of they almost never question it the way they might if I simply said I dont think I can. Here are some sample time policies, but I encourage you to develop 2-3 policies that you feel will best help you to focus your time around what matters most

* We have a family policy that each child can only participate in 1 scheduled activity at a time

* I have a policy that I only volunteer for one event per month

* I have a policy that I only do one evening commitment/ late night per week

* We have a policy that each family member plans 1 dinner per week

* We have a policy of not discussing problems or concerns during dinner

You know what kinds of limits would really help you make peace with time. Write them down, and start telling people about them. Youll be amazed at how simple and effective this is!

3-2-1 ACTION!

So, if youre serious about making peace with time, here is your 3-2-1 action strategy for the month:

3. Write down your top three priories, for your life, as they exist right now. Post them.

2. Identify two policies you plan to create for yourself and immediately implement them.

1. Clear 1 hour off of your schedule for unplanned time every day for a week. Do what thrills you or draws you in. (note: not sucks you in)

DVD video recorders cannot copy most of the protected DVD movie discs. The usual way to use a recorder is to use it as you would use a VCR. The price of recordable DVD players used to be $1,000. New and expensive models of high definition DVD players focus on improving the resolution and sharpness of the broadcast. For this purpose, electronic companies and manufacturers of DVD players are experimenting with a lot of technologies like lasers, complex compression techniques, and very large scale integrated circuits.

Discs produced on recordable DVD players can be played on some computers and DVD players. Some players can automatically create index menus with thumbnail images of each section on the disc. If you want to make permanent recordings from your old videotapes, then record through write-once media. snooze.

This same formula has been used by people to figure out the
answer to a problem theyve been working on. Before they go to bed, they repeat
out-loud what they are trying to figure out, so their subconscious mind can
latch onto it and begin working on it.

In the middle of the night they suddenly wake up with the
answer. Try doing this and see how it works for you.

Prioritize your day with the hardest tasks first. Your
mind is sharpest at the beginning of the day, before the daily tasks you do
begin to wear it out. Therefore, instead of easing yourself into the day (as
most people do) tackle your hardest projects first. No matter what your job or
assignment, when you can get the hardest tasks done and out of the way right of
the bat, you are able to think more clearly the rest of the day.

Stay focused on just one thing at a time. Do not
multi-task. A common misconception nowadays is the person who can do the most
things at once accomplishes more.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of
checking your email, making phone calls and writing a paper at the same time,
focus on just one activity (the hardest) get that done, and move on to the
next.

This way, you will get the hardest tasks done right away as
quickly and effectively as possible, and you will have done it much quicker than
you ever could have by trying to do 3 things at once. This is a key concept if
you are serious about learning to organize your life.

Outsource your unimportant activities. Obviously, these
will be vary for different people. For instance, if you are an entrepreneur and
own your own business, you will want to focus on the money making activities
(the marketing) and hire others to take care of the jobs that wont directly
affect your income.

If you are an employee, and maybe just want to spend more
time with your family, dont spend your whole day at work and then come home to
a million chores that need to be done. Hire somebody to take care of your daily
needs.

There are many people who you can pay to do your chores
such as feeding the pets, mowing the lawn, raking et leaves, etc, for very
reasonable prices. No matter what your goals in life, whether they are more
money or simply more free time to spend at home with your family, outsource the
trivial activities and watch your effectiveness and overall life organizing
skills increase dramatically.

These are merely a few simple yet very effective ways to
organize your life now. Time management is one of the most important and
essential skills you can ever develop; it is the difference between a
multi-million dollar entrepreneur and an employee struggling just to get by.
